Jonah

In the shade of the leafy gourd. When boiled after stuffing it with savoury meat, the young, long-shaped fruit is eaten by Arabs. The mature gourd, widened bulbously at one end, has a hard rind, which, when cleared of pulp, is used as a bottle. An early photograph.

Obadiah

In the Arab village of Sebastieh, built on part of the site of the city of Samaria stands the shell of a cathedral erected by the Crusaders in honour of St. John the Baptist. In the crypt are three empty tombs alleged once to have held the bodies of the Baptist, Obadiah and Elisha. An early photograph.
