Augustus

Statue of Augustus Caesar, from Corinth. Octavius, later known as Augustus, or 'godlike one,' became emperor of the Roman world in 27 B.C. He was born in 63 B.C. and died in A.D. 14. Caesar Augustus is mentioned in Luke ii, 1, as decreeing a general census for purposes of imperial taxation.
