Revd. Dr. David Instone Brewer, Technical Director

DIB

David Brewer is a Baptist minister with his roots in Wales. He trained for the ministry in Cardiff and was minister of the Llanishen Baptist Church in Cardiff for 5 years. During this time he noticed a lack of useful computer art on the market for use in church publicity and Bible study, so he decided to start his own collection. The collection started simply as "Christian Clip Art" on the Amstrad PCW (a CP/M machine) and developed with the market. Dr. Brewer achieved fame in the PCW graphics market with a disk of graphics utilities called "Brewers Utilities", one of the most popular of which was a program to anti-alias 2-colour files. He now uses his skills in computer graphics to compile the Christian Computer Art range of disks.

As an academic, Dr. Brewer achieved his Ph.D. at one of the greatest Universities in the world: Cambridge (UK). His thesis on the Rabbinic background to the Bible was published under the title Techniques and Assumptions in Jewish Exegesis before 70CE. In 1995 he was appointed as Research Librarian at Tyndale House, a Biblical Studies institute linked to Cambridge University. This is not a job that involves date-stamping books! David's role is to become involved with students' theses and help students research the material they need. He has had a significant input to many Tyndale House theses. In 1999 he was promoted to Research Fellow and Technical Officer.

Also in 1999 Dr. Brewer was appointed Consulting Editor to Lion Books and has contributed to the famous Lion Handbook to the Bible.

David Instone-Brewer is also the author of

Enid Instone Brewer BA(hons) RMN, RGN, Commercial Director

Enid

The other half of this husband and wife team, Enid is responsible for sorting out the paperwork, stock control, tax, sales, advertising and basically running the business. Enid graduated in Classical and Religious Studies from Cardiff University and qualified as a psychiatric nurse and then as a general nurse. Her nursing skills helped finance the family whilst David was studying for the ministry and at Cambridge.

Now her business and leadership skills are to the fore, but not only with Christian Computer Art. She is secretary of the local pre-school committee, a voluntary-sector organisation responsible for maintaining pre-school education in the community — as well as being an active member of the church. Enid field tests Christian Computer Art products regularly as she is editor of the church weekly newsletter and responsible for church publicity.

Importantly, Enid also runs the home and is mother to Alice and Joanne.

Associates

Even with two highly educated principals, a business like Christian Computer Art needs a wide skills mix. Before CD ROMs (which are common format for most computers), the Christian Clip Art series was only available on floppy disks. This required experts on various types of computer to convert the files to different computers' native file formats and disk operating systems. There is also need to engage artistic and other technical expertise. All this extra work is undertaken by expert associates to ensure that Christian Computer Art products are of the highest quality. Here are some of the associates.

He was press officer for his church for 15 years, and magazine editor for 5 years. He has written guidebooks on church communication and is used as guest speaker on the subject. As a freelance journalist he has written on computing for Christian publications and Christian computing for computer magazines.
